X-rays play a crucial role in producing detailed images of muscle, fat, bones and even air in the lungs, but it is not considered as an appropriate procedure for colon imaging( because they are not clear)

Barium enema, also called colon X-rays is the most recommended imaging procedure for producing detailed images of colon.

 

Procedure:

Barium is a white and chalky powdered, which is mixed with water and passes through a small tube in rectum. It actually covers the lining of rectum, making it possible for doctors to investigate anything that might cause a problem in colon.

 

In case of following conditions, doctors would order barium enema:

Changes in the way bowel works

Ongoing diarrhea or constipation

Rectal bleeding

Stomach pain

Unexplained weight loss

 

Preparation:

1. Special Diet: Drinking clear liquids only

2. Fasting: Avoiding any food or drink at midnight before the procedure

3. Laxative: Taking laxative in pill or liquid

4. Enema kit; cleaning all residue from colon

 

Diagnosis:

Through analyzing all conditions from rectum to small intestine, barium enema can diagnose:

Benign Tumors, like polyps

Cancer

Inflammatory bowel disease

Hirschsprung's disease
